Sylvia, Magner named in squad
James Magner and Colin Sylvia will line up this Saturday night at Metricon Stadium (Gold Coast), when the Demons take on Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions
Sylvia, who will miss the opening match of the home-and-away season for an indiscretion last year, is eligible for all NAB Cup matches.
The talented Demon didn’t play in last Friday’s intra-club clash at Casey Fields.
The Demons will also unveil 24-year-old rookie midfielder Magner, after he too did not play in last week’s intra-club.
Magner shone for Sandringham in the VFL last year, before he was selected in last December's NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
He was regarded as one of the VFL's best clearance players.
Boom recruit Mitch Clark and former Crow James Sellar have been named, along with rookie Tom Couch and 18-year-old Josh Tynan. They will all play their first official match for Melbourne.
New co-captain Jack Trengove will not play, meaning fellow co-captain Jack Grimes will lead Melbourne solely for the first time since the duo was appointed earlier this month.
For varying reasons, Jordie McKenzie, Liam Jurrah, Luke Tapscott, Cale Morton, Sam Blease, James Strauss, Neville Jetta, Max Gawn, Michael Evans, Jake Spencer, Kelvin Lawrence, Lucas Cook, Troy Davis, Rory Taggert, Leigh Williams and Jai Sheahan will not play.
In total, the Demons have named a 29-man squad.
Melbourne will play Gold Coast in the first of the triple-header, starting at 6.10pm (local time).
The Demons will then play Brisbane, before the Lions play the Suns in the final match of the night.
