MELBOURNE has delisted Austin Wonaeamirri and Michael Newton before the AFL’s first List Lodgment deadline on 31 October.

Originally from the Tiwi Islands, Wonaeamirri played 31 games and kicked 37 goals from 2008-11.

General Manager of List Management, Tim Harrington, said: “We worked closely with Aussie’s management, particularly Ned Guy from Stride, as well as liaising with the AFLPA throughout this process. Unfortunately, we have been unable to adequately communicate with Aussie to determine his future intentions. The Melbourne Football Club has made the choice to delist Aussie, and will continue to work with him over the next period to assist in planning for the next phase of his career.”

Wonaeamirri was selected at No.19 in the 2008 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

He made his debut as a Rookie in 2008, and immediately captivated the imagination of Melbourne supporters with his unique flair.

In Round Seven, 2008 against Fremantle, he kicked four goals and celebrated his way to a NAB Rising Star Nomination for his efforts.

In his debut season, Wonaeamirri played 18 matches, but injuries and the tragic death of his father interrupted the remainder of his time with Melbourne.  He managed 13 matches over the past three seasons.

Austin was also an important part of the Club’s indigenous programs, working closely with Liam Jurrah and Aaron Davey on the developing the Club’s community programs in the Northern Territory.

Michael Newton played 28 matches and kicked 35 goals, after being drafted at No.43 in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft.

He remained on the senior list until the end of the 2010 season, at which time he was delisted.  Newton was then redrafted at No.6 in the 2010 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

Newton made his AFL debut in 2007, and in the same year took the Mark of the Year in Round 16 against North Melbourne.

General Manager of List Management Tim Harrington said: “The Melbourne Football Club would like to sincerely thank Aussie and Michael for their contributions over the journey with the Club. We wish them both the best for the future."

Melbourne has also retained Michael Evans, Kelvin Lawrence and Daniel Nicholson as second year rookies.

Brad Green remains a veteran outside the primary list.

These changes allow Melbourne to have three selections in the November NAB AFL Draft.
