THE MELBOURNE Football Club was saddened to hear that Sean Wight - star defender, an integral part of the ‘Irish Experiment’ of the 1980s, and named as one of the Club’s ‘Heroes’ in 2008 - has been diagnosed with cancer.

Wight, who played 150 games between 1985 and 1995, and went on to serve on the Club’s Board, was hailed by Garry Lyon as ‘just about the best athlete I’ve seen play football’.

As part of the Club family, and renowned for his enthusiasm and dedication to the Club well beyond his playing career, we are maintaining contact with Sean, and supporting him as he begins treatment.

Our thoughts go out to Sean, his family and friends.
