MELBOURNEfc’s Aaron Davey and Colin Sylvia are free to play after beening charged by the match review panel following incidents from Sunday afternoons game against Port Adelaide.
Colin Sylvia was charged with ‘bumping or making forceful contact from front-on’ towards Kane Cornes, during the first quarter of play.
Sylvia’s incident was accessed as negligent contact (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. Due to Sylvia having no existing good or bad record, an early plea will reduce his sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.
Aaron Davey was charged with a level one charging offence, after contact made with Matt Thomas during the third quarter.
Davey’s incident was assessed as negligent contact (one point), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of three activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. Due to Davey having no existing good or bad record, an early plea will reduce his sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.
Also, Travis Johnstone was charged with abusive language towards umpire Craig Hendrie at the conclusion of the game. Johnston can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea
In other incidents assessed, Byron Pickett has been cleared of any wrong doing and is free to play on the weekend. It was the view of the match review panel that “Pickett pinned both of Cornes' arms and dropped his knees behind the Port Adelaide player's body to take him to the ground. Cornes' knees dug into the ground, which propelled both players forward and caused Cornes' head to hit the ground. Pickett did not sling or drive Cornes into the ground. The forceful contact with the ground was due to both players' momentum and while the action resulted in an injury to Cornes, which was unfortunate, it was not a reportable offence”.
The club has until 10 Tuesday morning to consider its options.
