Magner ready to construct AFL career
Midfielder James Magner says he only has to look across from the training track to realise he is living his dream
Magner, who will play his first official match for Melbourne in its NAB Cup opener at Metricon Stadium this Saturday night, previously worked in construction.
But, after being overlooked in several drafts, Magner is determined to make every post a winner at the highest level.
“I’ve adapted well [to life in the AFL]. Working in construction, I had to get up and work a 10-hour day and then do football,” he told DeeTV.
“But now I get to fine tune my football skills and do it all through the day, so it’s been really good.
“There are a couple of excavators out next to the training track, so it gives me extra motivation to train and get better.”
Magner said he couldn’t wait to play this weekend, since it had been several years in the making.
“It’s really exciting. I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
“I’ve been waiting for this for a fairly long time now, so I’m really excited.”
