YOUNG gun Jack Trengove says the Demons let skipper James McDonald down in his 250th match, with a disappointing 29-point loss to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

Trengove said the players wished they could have produced a better showing following their round 21 loss.

“He’s a superstar of the club. All of the boys really wanted to try their heart out for him, but obviously with the result, it didn’t really happen,” Trengove told melbournefc.com.au.

“It was pretty disappointing that we couldn’t put on a better effort for him.

“If we had our time again, we all would’ve definitely tried that bit harder or tried to change it somehow, but we couldn’t, unfortunately.”

Trengove said the Dees didn’t take their chances, particularly on the scoreboard.

“We didn’t take our opportunities when we got them,” he said.

“I think Port Adelaide was just first at the ball all day and if you haven’t got the ball in your hands, you can’t do much about winning the game.

“We were just second to it all day and it just wasn’t good enough in the end.”
Returning to his native state, Trengove said he enjoyed his homecoming despite the frustrating result.

“It was good to come back to South Australia. Melbourne doesn’t have the best results here in the last eight years or so,” he said.

“I wasn’t anything special, although I tried hard.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t go my way either, but you can’t do much about that either.”

On the back of an impressive period from the Demons, winning four matches from six matches, Trengove said the team is now determined to bounce back in round 22 - and what will be James McDonald’s last match with the club.

“We’ve showed a lot throughout this year that we can compete with the better teams in the AFL, but obviously we wanted to finish off the year well,” he said.

“We obviously couldn’t make the finals going into the game, but we really wanted to finish off the season well and finish off on a good note and take it into 2011.

“We really want to end the season on a positive note, but we couldn’t do that against Port. But next week, we’ll be doing our best to really finish off with a win.”
