SCANS have cleared Brad Green of lung contusion but he remains in the Epworth Hospital and is being monitored to ensure he recovers well.

Melbourne is not ruling him out of its round 10 clash against Essendon, but will not know for certain his condition until early in the week.

"The fear was he had some some sort of lung problem so they went and scanned it but it was nothing too serious," Demons coach Mark Neeld said.

Green was taken to hospital after damaging his lung during the first quarter of Melbourne's clash with Carlton at the MCG on Sunday.

Green was collected heavily by young Blue Josh Bootsma as he attempted to rove a pack in the Demons' forward line.

The former Melbourne captain had coughed up blood in the changerooms and was short of breath before he was taken to hospital with a suspected lung contusion.

Melbourne lost Clint Bartram before the game with a knee injury, replaced in the selected team by Luke Tapscott.

The Blues had two late withdrawals, defenders Chris Yarran and Lachie Henderson.

Yarran is still battling a turf toe injury, and Henderson didn't recover in time from a groin problem suffered in last week's loss to Adelaide.

The pair was replaced by Kane Lucas and Paul Bower.
