CAPTAIN Brad Green has thrown his support behind a pre-season competition.

With the future of the NAB Cup in doubt, Green says he finds the pre-season competition beneficial for the season proper.

“I like to play games of footy. [I like] to get out there and get out of pre-season training … and playing a game,” he said from Melbourne’s family day at Luna Park on Sunday.

“I’d still like to see some pre-season games - if it’s a couple of practice games or three or four games - so be it.

“I like the format of playing against the two teams. It was something different and unique to our game that we trialed - it was a like a 20/20 [cricket] concept, which was unique. And it wasn’t too bad.”

Meanwhile, Green says his role in the future of Tom Scully is to simply offer him support.

“I’m there to back Tom up in anything that goes on around here - for all of our guys,” he said.

“It’s not only Tom, but all of our guys … to get behind our young guys and make sure they’re playing to the best of their ability.

“I spoke to Sculls [after his media conference]. He’s a professional kid and he played all right yesterday (Saturday).

“It was his first game back [from a knee complaint] and he got heavily tagged and he’s a great kid Tom. He’s going to get heavily tagged week-in-week-out and it’s something that comes with the good players.”
