Dees will fire for Queen and country
Melbourne midfielder Brent Moloney says the club are determined to defeat Collingwood on the Queen’s Birthday
Moloney was one of Melbourne’s best in their 37-point loss to St Kilda at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night, racking up 24 possessions and a game-high four centre clearances.
But he says the players will not be satisfied with another honourable defeat on the big stage against the Magpies.
“No definitely not, we’re going out to win the game and we’re definitely going to have a crack at them,” Moloney said after the loss to the competition-leading Saints.
“It’s a massive game for this footy club, it’s the biggest game of the year and whoever gets the chance to play, it’s a privilege to play (on the) Queens Birthday.”
Fringe players will be trying to impress for the club’s VFL affiliate Casey Scorpions on Sunday, but Moloney said calls for Jack Watts to make the step up are unlikely to be heeded by the match committee.
“They’ll play him when he’s ready and they are not going to play guys out of form. He had a better game last week and if he plays well today then his name might come up,” he said of the number one pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.
Moloney is guaranteed his spot, running into some hot form after three years battling osteitis pubis and a shoulder operation in 2008.
But a full pre season has seen the 25-year-old play all ten games so far this season, taking his career tally to 79.
“I’m obviously happy to be back playing and injury free,” Moloney said.
“But I won’t really be happy until we start winning games.”
The midfielder says the Demons chasing and tackling pressure against St Kilda was pleasing, but their inability to convert opportunities proved costly.
“We had our chances, I suppose we probably didn’t get the ball to the forwards as we’d like but obviously we had a few shots in front of goal and we missed them, so that was disappointing,” he said.
“We just need to put four quarters together and we’ll start knocking teams off.”
