Todd Viney’s season assessment
Michael is a rookie who made his AFL debut this year. He was hampered by a hip injury, which he carried for most of the year, but he has had that operated on now. He is a really good inside midfielder. Michael runs hard, spreads well and wins plenty of the footy, so we were really happy with his season.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Did not play (played in VFL practice match)

VFL: Round 1 v Geelong
Michael is a very impressive young player. He looks like he’s a real chance in the future. He had 21 disposals and showed composure. Michael’s a good kick and is clean. He knows where to go, so he’s one to watch coming through. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 2 v Port Melbourne
Michael continued on his merry way. He looks a very good player. He had 21 touches and played in the midfield. He’s got very good composure and skills. His second and fourth quarters were a little bit quiet - he had eight touches in the first and third terms - so he’s an interesting performer. With a bit more consistency, he’s going to be a very good player. He’s got good all-round skills. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Michael was good again. He didn’t use the ball as well as he had in recent weeks, but he still got 27 possessions. He did a lot of smart work among the clearances and also spread well. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 4 - Bye

VFL: Round 5 v Frankston
He continued to do really well, this kid. He was very good with 26 possessions, and kicked two goals as a midfielder. He also set up a couple of other goals, due to his run. He also showed good skills and showed a lot of promise. As a rookie, he put his best foot forward. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
I thought Michael played another good game. His run and spread was fantastic. His midfield work-rate was high and he continued to progress really well. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 7 v Bendigo Bombers
Michael had another good game. He has had a great year and has been Mr Consistent. He helped instigate the turnaround in the third quarter. He won his hands on the footy, but his work-rate and run came to the fore. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Michael had a very good debut. He looked at home in the clinches and won the ball very well. He will gain great experience from his involvement in that game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Michael worked hard. He wasn’t as effective as last round and found his second game a lot tougher. His physicality was good and he tackled well. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Michael played his role and again collected some good possessions. He used the ball intelligently and predictably on most occasions which, was pleasing. He picked up the pace of the game remarkably well. He will continue to improve with more games under his belt. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Michael came on later in the game and got five possessions. He continued to learn from each game he played. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle (emergency)/VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Compared to what he was before he went into the seniors, he wasn’t that good, but he wasn’t bad, either. He probably needed the run after playing a few senior games and not playing full game times. He did some good things and had some impact. He was a bit stiff in the third quarter - he had two shots at goal, one hit the post, and one went over the post. So, if he’d snared one of those, it would have been really handy. But, he worked hard. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 13 - Bye

VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Michael had a different game. He struggled to find space, but tried to be physical in the way he played. But he kept working under pressure. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
Michael didn’t get a lot of the ball, but he was involved in a lot of close hack work. He had a stack of tackles, 13 possessions, and kicked a really good goal from a stoppage. He did a lot of hard work. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 16 v Frankston
Michael was a standout this match. He had 25 possessions in the midfield, and broke the game open with his run. He also made good decisions with his kicks. He was very good. Brad Gotch
