Todd Viney’s season assessment
Addam had an opportunity as a crumbing forward. He’s got beautiful skills, but he still needs to work on his defensive skills, although he did make some progression in that area.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Addam had a very good pre-season and did some good work, but didn’t make the most of his opportunities in this game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Addam came on late in the third quarter as our substitute. We needed him to play a role and while his energy was good, unfortunately he didn’t make much impact. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 2 v Port Melbourne
After coming back from the AFL, I was worried about how Addam might react to being dropped, but he was nearly the best player. He was a real positive. Addam had 25 touches and kicked three goals. He laid tackles and played in the midfield. Addam kept going all day. He also stood up for himself when he got whacked by one of the opposition. He showed some real ticker, so that was good. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns (emergency)

VFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles (emergency)/VFL: Round 5 v Frankston
Addam traveled with Melbourne to Perth and then came back and played. I thought he was very, very good. He kicked two goals and had 26 possessions. He did a bit of work on the ball, as well up forward. He used the ball sensationally, so that was great. His last quarter wasn’t as dominant as his first three, but in the context of his week, he did a really good job. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Addam was very lively upon his return to the senior side. He won the ball really well and used it with precision. His work-rate was the area that allowed him to play his best game for the club so far. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Addam continued to hit the scoreboard and kicked a career-best three goals. We needed him to take the game on more and use his kicking skills to benefit the team. The more he got the ball, the more confident he should become. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Addam was once again in-and-out of the game. He kept hitting the scoreboard, but needed to work on his defensive positioning and finishing. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Addam was in-and-out of the game. The defensive side of his game required more focus. He needed to continue to take the game on when he had the ball. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 10 v Bendigo Bombers
Addam played like he did at senior level. He was mainly on the forward line, and I played him occasionally on the ball. He ended up with 16 possessions, and set up a number of goal assists. He used it pretty well around that mid to forward part of the ground. Unfortunately he got a bit of a corkie in third quarter, which may have slowed him down a bit. Although it looked like a heavy cork, he kept going, which was a good effort. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 11 v Collingwood
Addam kicked three, which we knew he could do. He didn’t have a lot of the ball. The thing we needed him down there for was his tackling and pressure. He had three tackles and we’d probably want him to get between four and six, but he did get better with that. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Addam had 19 possessions. He was probably not as dominant as he could be. He just looked a little bit flat, but he had to work through that. When he got the ball, something tended to happen with it. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 13 - Bye

VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
He was very good. It was a stunning turnaround in form from Addam. He worked hard at every contest and his attitude was very good. Only a couple of kicks and decisions let him down. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
I rated Addam as good. He used the ball really well going inside 50, which was what his role was and he did it better this round. He learned in this match that he could be a bit more constructive with it going inside 50. Because he was so clean, he was important at ground level. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
Addam was very lively early, and kicked an important goal to get us going. He maintained his work rate and involvement throughout the game, and finished the day with three goals, which was a good game to build on. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Addam was in-and-out of the play. He looked unsure on occasions and at other times took the game on, which we need Addam to do more often. He set up a couple of scoring opportunities and with better ball use, he could’ve hit the scoreboard himself. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Addam finished up out of position. His intensity lacked, but he did some good things and could have had more impact had his skills been better. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
Addam worked really hard, and had a good all-round game - not only with his own goalkicking, but he set up a few others. He also contributed through the midfield. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 20 v Coburg Tigers
Injured: ill

VFL: Round 21 v Werribee Tigers
He looked lively for most of the game, before he succumbed to a foot complaint at three quarter-time, which kept him off for the entire final term. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 22 v Northern Bullants
Injured: foot

VFL: Qualifying final v Port Melbourne
Injured: foot
