Summary
The Demons strung together consecutive wins last round for just the second time this season. On Friday night, the Dees face another hurdle, winning at Etihad Stadium. Although Melbourne hasn’t won at Etihad Stadium since 2007, there are strong indications it can break the drought this round. With young players like Tom Scully, Jack Trengove and Jordie McKenzie finding form and senior players like Brad Green, Brent Moloney and Col Sylvia stepping up, the team is ready to conquer the ‘demon’ that is Etihad Stadium. The Bulldogs will be keen to prove to their supporters that they are a top eight team, which will no doubt make for great Friday night football.

Players to watch
Melbourne: Ricky Petterd
After securing a career-high 14 tackles in last round’s game against Richmond, there is no doubt that Petterd has found his feet in the senior side. While Petterd is known for his marking and ability to kick a goal in the forward line, his defensive pressure was a key factor in Melbourne’s win last week. The confidence boost should put Petterd in good stead for a solid performance at Etihad Stadium.

Richmond: Liam Picken
Picken is currently leading the tackles for Bulldogs and will play an important role in attempting to shut down Melbourne’s forward line. The hard-at-it tagger recorded 13 tackles last week against Gold Coast and will be looking to back it up.

Match-up to watch
Liam Picken v Brent Moloney
Picken has successfully played the tagging role this season and is genuine candidate for Moloney. ‘Beamer’ has been a constant and crucial contributor for the Demons, leading the team’s disposals and tackles. A close tag on Moloney will be a test of his leadership and ability to work closely with his fellow midfielders.

Memorable match
1954 Grand Final: Footscray 15.12 (102) d Melbourne 7.9 (51), MCG
With the advent of Norm Smith as coach in 1952, the young Melbourne side’s rise from ‘cellar dwellers’ to Grand Finalists was an impressive one. But Footscray was a formidable foe in 1954. While Norm Smith’s youngsters - including the likes of Ron Barassi, John Beckwith, Brian Dixon, Ian Ridley and Bob Johnson - were shaping an impressive team, fortune lay with the opposition on Grand Final Day, 1954. Footscray, led by Charlie Sutton and ably supported by Ted Whitten and Jack Collins, proved triumphant by an emphatic 51 points. Fortune soon favoured Melbourne, however - the side would go on to win flags in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964, while the 1954 victory remains Footscray’s sole premiership.

What Dean Bailey says …
"We're looking to build some effort and consistency every minute of every quarter, but I think if we can get on a roll then the confidence of the guys can grow and we can stay at that level. …..This Friday is super important for us."
