Promising trio signs on
Melbourne has re-signed three emerging players as it continues to settle its list under Mark Neeld
Strauss and Spencer both made successful returns from serious injury in the latter part of 2012, while Bail was a solid performer all season despite enduring a frustrating period mid-year when he missed games as he recovered from concussion.
"These three form a part of the younger group who are coming through together that we think are the players of the future," Melbourne list manager Tim Harrington said.
Strauss suffered a shocking broken leg in 2011 and had surgery earlier this year to remove pins in his leg. The 22-year-old returned to senior football in round 16 and played the next seven games.
"He provides that run and carry, speed and skill from our back half and he has built his body up immeasurably, so he is much more equipped to play AFL football now," Harrington said.
Strauss was selection No.19 in the 2008 AFL National Draft and has played 18 games since making his debut in 2010.
Spencer returned from a knee reconstruction in 2012 and grabbed the rucking opportunity presented to him in round 14 when Mark Jamar was injured.
He impressed with his competitiveness and second efforts and, although he has a heart-in-mouth kicking style, further improvement will create much needed selection pressure in the ruck.
"He's a big fellow, very brave and performed well in the ruck," Harrington said.
"In terms of succession planning, he is actually what the club needs as a follow-up to Mark Jamar and to put pressure on the ruck position within the team."
The former rookie has played 18 games since his debut in round one, 2009.
Bail emerged this year as a dependable role player within the team. He has good endurance, is brave and resilient. The 24-year-old played 18 games in 2012 to take his game tally to 36.
"He is really finding his feet in AFL football and is really valued internally," Harrington said. "He has a sensational work rate and can play a variety of positions."
Melbourne announced on Saturday it had delisted a number of players while discussions on new contracts have progressed well with a number of players who remain on the list, including free agent Lynden Dunn and 28-year-old Joel MacDonald.
