THE YOUNGEST skipper in the history of the game, Jack Trengove, says he wasn’t sure if he was ready to lead the club when he was appointed co-captain with Jack Grimes at the start of the year.

The 20 year-old and Grimes have grown into the role as the season has unfolded, and both have earned strong praise for their leadership throughout the season by the club - and particularly Neeld. The youngsters are regarded as two of the best young emerging leaders in the competition.

Speaking at Melbourne’s Foundation Heroes event at Crown on Tuesday night, Trengove spoke openly about being given the mantle.

“By far the proudest moment of my life occurred earlier this year, when [coach] Mark Neeld shook my hand and told me that I’d just become the youngest captain in the history of the game,” he said.

“To be honest, at the time I wasn’t exactly sure if I was ready to step up to the plate and help guide this club into the future.

“People questioned myself, Grimesy and the rest of the leadership group right from the start. And no doubt, some will still hold that belief to this day.

“The public can say what they want and form their own opinion, but all we care about is doing the best job that we possibly can to help turn this great club around.”

Given the tough season Melbourne has endured - both on and off the field - Trengove is adamant and determined that the lessons learned in 2012 will hold him and the club in good stead.

“Grimesy and myself, as co-captains of the Melbourne Football Club, promise that we will leave no stone unturned in our quest to bring home our 13th premiership,” he said.

Meanwhile, Trengove announced at the Foundation Heroes dinner that the Melbourne players had donated $30,000 to the club.
