Stynes steps in
By Caroline Wilson

MELBOURNE president Jim Stynes will take charge of the club's football department in a role he described as significantly more hands-on in the day-to-day running of the club. The appointment was made at Monday night's board meeting, at which Stynes' vice-president, Don McLardy, was also placed in a football co-directorship role should Stynes be forced to step away from the running of the club for health reasons. Stynes said he planned to spend more time with soon-to-be-out-of-contract coach Dean Bailey and would be spending less time with his Reach Group as part of his pledge to steer the Demons through what threatens to be a tumultuous few months. ''I'll have a lot more presence in the club and the football,'' Stynes told The Age last night. ''It's the part that I enjoy. I'll spend time with the coach every week and more time with Dean generally. When we find the appropriate person we'll get another football person on the board, but at the moment in the short term I'm that person. ''I'm feeling a lot better and I've made that commitment and should anything happen to change that Don is there also.''

Jim Stynes steps into Demons footy role
By Herald Sun

MELBOURNE president Jim Stynes has stepped in to take charge of the Demons' football department. Stynes was officially appointed at the club's board meeting earlier this week, with a view to having a greater presence around the club and working more closely with coach Dean Bailey. Bailey is out of contract at the end the season and with the Demons battling on the field, Stynes' presence will also ease growing tension between chief executive Cameron Schwab and Bailey. Stynes declared he was doing well in his on-going battle with cancer, although vice-president Don McLardy has been appointed in a support role to Stynes should medical issues arise. ''I'm feeling a lot better and I've made that commitment and should anything happen to change that Don is there also,'' Stynes told the media.
