MELBOURNE'S out of contract midfielder Colin Sylvia says he hopes to play out his career with the Demons.
But the unrestricted free agent doesn't think the signing process needs to be rushed.
Sylvia said his management had been in discussions with the club since the start of the year but he did not think too deeply about his future while the season was underway.
"I've been at the club 10 years, a life member, it has been a pretty big part of my life," Sylvia said on Wednesday. "I'd like to stay. Hopefully [the] two parties can agree on a deal."
Sylvia admitted that he had not got the most out of his talent while at Melbourne.
"I don't think I [have]. However long I play, it is very important to me to finish my career on a high and get the absolute most out of it," Sylvia said.
"I still think my best footy is ahead of me."
The 27-year-old midfielder said he had discussed with former teammates what it was like to play at another club but the conversations were irrelevant to his decision.
"I am my own person and I'll make the right decision for me," Sylvia said.
Sylvia plays his 150th game for Melbourne against Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.
He says his body feels better now than it did in the first three or four years of his career and he revealed there was a time early on when he contemplated giving the game away at the elite level as he "thought footy wasn't for me." However, he managed to work through that phase.
"I thought I would hang on and things went right at the right time and [I] worked hard to get the body right," Sylvia said.
"It all turned around but I feel very fortunate and lucky to be here where I am today and playing 150 games for this great club."
Sylvia has managed 19.4 disposals per game this season and played a variety of roles. He has played in just two finals during his time at the Demons, both in 2006.
With Neil Craig his sixth coach in his 10 seasons, Sylvia says he is enjoying his football at the moment.
"It is very different, definitely very positive at the moment," Sylvia said.
However whether he stays a Demon beyond 2013 remains to be seen.
"My management is talking to the club. [I'll} go through that process and hopefully come to an agreement with a deal," Sylvia said.
