MIDFIELDER Matt Jones says Melbourne’s 61 point loss to Carlton at the MCG on Sunday was not a reflective margin of the effort displayed by the Demons.
Jones said there were genuine signs of improvement, but added that it was still a 10 goal loss, which hurt the Dees.
“I don’t reckon the score showed exactly how we played. We attacked them well when they had the ball. I think some skill errors cost us a few goals, but there was definitely an improvement from the past couple of weeks,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“It’s not great any time, when you’re getting done by 60 points, but the things that Neeldy (Mark Neeld) has been telling us to focus on during the week – those things are starting to happen in game.
“We’re just taking out positives of that, so the actual scoreboard – it’s not great getting done by 60 points – but now we’re starting to see things that we’ve been training, paying off in games.
“There are positives, but it’s hard to try and be positive after you’ve been done by 61 points.”
The mature age recruit racked up 27 disposals against the Blues, and was one of Melbourne’s best. Jones said he was feeling more settled at the highest level as he progressed each week.
“The main thing I’ll come away with is just confidence,” the six gamer said.
“I knew I could always play that type of game, but now that I’ve done it, I’ve just got to keep on backing it up.
“The main thing is just confidence in my own game.”
