DURING the recent Christmas break, the Roos family – Paul, Tami, Dylan and Tyler– were fortunate enough to spend some time in Nairobi, Kenya.
And it was an experience the Roos family will never forget.
They had the opportunity to visit Damside Preparatory School, which is located in the Kibera slum.
Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi – with estimates of more than one million people – and the largest urban slum in Africa.
Conditions are poor, with most residents unable to access basic services, such as running water and electricity.
They were incredibly touched by the amazing people and it was hard to wipe the smiles off their faces.
Peter Mandela, who is the head of school and founder, provided the Roos family with a tour of the school.
Mandela also oversees teaching more than 250 kids. These children often receive their one and only meal of the day at the school.
Paul, Tami, Dylan and Tyler were also given a tour of the slum. The Roos family was incredibly touched by these amazing people. But what they noticed were incredibly happy kids.
Overall, there were many experiences from their visit.
And it puts in perspective the day-to-day worries in our lives, when you consider these people are living off $1.25 per day. The community spirit that was witnessed by the Roos family was evident. And their ability to help and support each other – to simply survive was telling.
The Roos family provided the school kids with new shoes and Melbourne supporter gear, which they loved. It was also a good opportunity for the Roos family to meet some of the kids they sponsor.
Although the kids got some smiles from the visit, it was a lasting memory that the Roos family will always have.
All and any help is much appreciated by Peter Mandela.
