CASEY has suffered its second heavy defeat in as many weeks, going down to Williamstown by 80 points at Casey Fields on Saturday.
On a cold a blustery day, the Scorpions, wearing pink guernseys this week to raise money and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, struggled from the outset and were easily beaten around the ground in another disappointing display.
Williamstown had a strong breeze to its advantage in the first term – and made the most of it – scoring majors at regular intervals throughout the quarter. The conditions made it difficult for Casey to force its way out of defence, with the wind playing havoc with its delivery by foot.
The ball hardly saw the Casey half of the ground, with Williamstown leading by a daunting 50 points at quarter-time, as the Scorpions failed to score.
Within a minute of the second term, Williamstown was able to do what Casey couldn’t in the first term, scoring a goal against the breeze to extend its lead. The Seagulls midfield were doing a much better job of locking the ball in the midfield, creating stoppages and ensuring the Scorpions players were never able to get space and take advantage of the breeze.
Finally, at the 24-minute mark of the term, Jake Best was able to put the Scorpions on the board with a goal, and at half-time, the margin was reduced only slightly to 49 points.
With the wind at their backs once again, Williamstown ensured the third term was practically a carbon copy of the first, scoring goals at will. Casey again was kept scoreless for the quarter, as the Seagulls locked the ball in their forward half and capitalised at every opportunity with little resistance.
After a seven goal to nil third term, the Seagulls held a commanding 91-point lead going into the last.
With little but pride to play for, Casey came out in the final term with some vigour. Sam Blease had a goal within the first minute, with a sensational running shot at goal from the boundary line. His effort was followed up by a Nathan Page goal.
Black clouds arrived at the midway point of the term, adding rain to the already miserable conditions. Casey continued to press, however, and was rewarded when Sam Blease snapped his second from 30 metres out.
A free kick, along with an undisciplined 50-metre penalty provided Williamstown with the final goal of the game late in the term, and the Seagulls ran out convincing 80 point victors.
Of the Demons, Luke Tapscott was one of the best, providing some relief down back, utilising his strength and long-kicking ability, collecting 30 touches for the afternoon.
Jay Kennedy-Harris had his best game in a Casey jumper, working particularly hard all day across the midfield and wing, laying an impressive nine tackles for the game, as well as collecting 32 touches.
Blease with his two last-quarter goals and 23 touches was also solid; Mitch Clisby (20), Alex Georgiou (18) and Viv Michie (18) were the next highest possession getters.
Casey will be looking to redeem itself when it takes on Richmond – who sits just above on the VFL table – at Punt Road Oval at 11am next Sunday.
