COACH Paul Roos says the Melbourne players representing Casey Scorpions must bring a better effort each week.
Roos said it was imperative Casey competed with some of the top teams in the VFL, which would in turn help the Melbourne-listed players’ chances of a promotion to the AFL.
“I had a really good look at the seconds game yesterday (Tuesday) and without individualising, I was disappointed with our seconds. We’ve just got to do a better job as a club,” he said.
“Box Hill versus Casey, if you want to talk about Hawthorn versus the Demons, they were fantastic and we were poor.”
Roos spoke of the consistent effort needed by younger players to be considered for senior selection.
“Their (Box Hill) young players come to play every week and that’s what really struck me when I watched the game last night (Monday),” he said.
“We’ve got to get better at that, but we’ll judge each individual on their own game, but collectively I thought we were really disappointing.”
Although a frustrating loss, Roos said midfielder Viv Michie and the versatile Sam Blease were pushing for selection.
Roos also said that youngster Jimmy Toumpas was in good form but was working on consistency.
“Jimmy’s playing ok; we’re just trying to get it consistent,” he said.
“We’re probably treating Jimmy as a first-year player and he’s going OK – he’s really improving. We’re really comfortable with what he’s doing and he’s just working on some areas.
“He’ll definitely play senior footy, whether it’s this week [or later on], but he’ll definitely play senior footy at some stage again this year because we’re really happy with the way he’s going.”
