The opening term proved to be an even contest.

Early on, the Blues had control, kicking three of the first four goals, but when Chris Dawes and James Frawley kicked back-to-back majors in time-on, the Demons trailed by just two points at quarter-time.
Jack Watts was Melbourne’s other goalscorer, booting his side’s first at the six-minute mark.
Second quarter: Melb 6.7 (43) to Carl 5.9 (39)
The second term was somewhat of a reverse of the first quarter. Melbourne dominated much of the play before time-on, booting three unanswered goals.
Nathan Jones started the run with a fine goal from the boundary line, before Frawley had two for the day – and a couple for the first time in his AFL career. And when Lynden Dunn opened his account, the Demons led by 17 points at the 14-minute mark.
But back-to-back majors from David Ellard deep in the quarter put the Blues within three points at the long break.
Third quarter: Melb 10.8 (68) to Carl 6.11 (47)
Goals were hard to come by early in the second half and it took a fine tap from Dawes to a running Rohan Bail to get the ball rolling in the third term.
The Demons again had the majority of play for the quarter and by the final break, led by 21 points after Bail kicked his second.
Dawes, who booted his second for the match, and Jay Kennedy-Harris were Melbourne’s other goalkickers in the third term, as Chris Yarran was Carlton’s only goalscorer during that period.
Final quarter: Melbourne 12.9 (81) d Carlton 7.16 (58)
Carlton wasted its opportunities early in the final term, when it opened with five behinds in a row.
And when Watts bobbed up for his second of the day – and the first goal of the final term – the Demons were up by 22 points at the 12-minute mark.
Yarran booted Carlton’s only major for the term just before time-on, but when Cam Pedersen kicked a beauty from the pocket – the Demons were home and had their first win of the season by 23 points.
