Scores were hard to come by early in the match, but when Jarryd Roughead kicked the first goal at the 12-minute mark, it was the start of three in a row for the Hawks.
The Demons trailed by 22 points in time-on, but when Dean Kent opened Melbourne’s account at the 23-minute mark and James Frawley followed up soon after, the margin was cut to 10 points. Bernie Vince could have made it three in succession, but his shot for goal missed for a behind.
Isaac Smith added Hawthorn’s fourth deep in the quarter to give his side a 15-point advantage at the first change.
Second quarter: Hawthorn 10.8 (68) to Melbourne 4.5 (29)
The Demons started the second term positively, when Max Gawn kicked truly almost a minute into the quarter.
But Melboune’s eight-point deficit was soon blown out to 39 points, when Hawthorn booted five consecutive majors.
Jack Viney ended the streak with Melbourne’s only other major for the term, but when David Hale added Hawthorn’s sixth for the quarter, the margin was back out to 39 points at the long break.
Third quarter: Hawthorn 15.8 (98) to Melbourne 7.8 (50)
Hawthorn’s dominance continued in the third quarter, when it booted four of the first five goals to lead by 56 points. Roughead booted three goals in this period to have five by the final break.
The Demons added three goals for the term, including Gawn’s second and back-to-back goals from Jay Kennedy-Harris and Aidan Riley, who helped reduce the margin to 42 points.
But when Luke Breust kicked his third just before three quarter-time, Hawthorn was back out to a 48-point lead.
Final quarter: Hawthorn 17.13 (115) d Melbourne 9.11 (65)
With the game all but over entering the final term, it was a matter of how far the Hawks or whether the Dees could show some fight.
In the end, both sides managed two goals each with Dom Tyson and Chris Dawes booting Melbourne’s majors.
The Hawks won the term by two points, but the match by 50 points.
