TRENT Rivers was a little nervous ahead of his AFL debut.

And although these nerves didn’t impact his performance, they interrupted his trip to Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“I actually got into a bit of a car accident on the way here,” Rivers told Melbourne Media.

“Jacko (Luke Jackson) left his player card at home, so I’ve quickly done a three-point turn out of a driveway and reversed into some old man’s car.

“And he was out the front, so I had to give him my details and move on.

“But after that, the nerves were pretty much gone.”

The 18-year-old admits he was a little distracted heading to the game, but that certainly didn’t show once the ball was bounced.

Rivers had six disposals in the opening term against Carlton, displaying the poise and class that saw him earn an unexpected Round 2 call up.

“I think the game was pretty open and that’s sort of my style,” he said.

“I was able to get a handball receive here and there and open up the game.

“As the game tightened up I had to lockdown on my man a bit more, so I didn’t really get my run and carry going, but first quarter was real fun.”

The Demons, who led by 42 points at the 12-minute mark of the second term, managed to hold onto the narrowest of victories against Carlton.

But the margin didn’t worry Rivers, who was able to enjoy a shower in the middle of the team song post-game.

“It was pretty awesome – just to run out there to start off and then to bring home the win was awesome,” he said.

The No.32 draft pick was able to debut alongside his close mate Jackson, making the occasion even more memorable for the young duo.

“It’s unreal, we’ve done everything together since we were probably 14 years old, footy wise,” he said.

“To be able to come out here today with him was awesome.”

Rivers racked up 12 touches throughout the afternoon and got his AFL career off to the perfect start against the Blues.
