WITH 46 names to choose from, picking your best set shot kick isn’t an easy task.

The likes of Bayley Fritsch, Jake Melksham and Tom McDonald all come to mind, but assistant coach Alan Richardson has someone else at the top of his list.

“I’m not going to go with a forward,” Richardson said on the Inside Melbourne podcast.

“I’m going to go with a midfielder.”

When the going gets tough and a goal after the siren is required, Richardson wants the ball in the vice-captain’s hands.

“Jack Viney doesn’t miss,” he said.

“Now this is probably more a reflection of the way that Greg Stafford’s set up our goal kicking program this year, where because you can’t put on the pressure that is game day … he’s had these little competitions going.

“While it might be as insignificant as, ‘You’ve got to buy me coffee this week,’ trust me, these blokes don’t like spending money if they don’t have to.

“Viney doesn’t miss. He doesn’t miss a running goal; he rarely misses a set shot.

“Fritsch is an amazing kick, but I’m going to be a bit controversial and go with Jack.”
