KEY defender Sam Frost says it was a nervous few days leading up to the final day of the NAB AFL Trade Period, but he’s delighted to have returned to his native state and joined Melbourne.
The former Giant became a Demon on Thursday when Melbourne traded pick No.23 to GWS. Along with Frost, the Giants also gave the Dees picks No.40 and No.53.
“It’s been a little bit of an anxious wait the past few days with the trade period … but I’m absolutely stoked it’s been done and I’m happy to be back in Melbourne,” Frost told Dee TV.
“I was pretty keen to get to the Demons and I think the Saints put a little bit of pressure on and made sure the Dees got it done.”
Originally from Ormond/Wesley College/Sandringham Dragons, Frost was the No.1 pick in the 2012 NAB AFL Rookie Draft (held in December 2011).
He made his AFL debut in round 17, 2012 against Fremantle at Patersons Stadium.
Frost played three matches in his first season, made two appearances in 2013 and stepped up significantly this year. Overall, he played 21 games with the Giants.
“I missed out on the national draft in 2011 and got picked up in the rookie draft and went up to Sydney and had an all right year in my first year and developed a bit more in my second year,” he said.
“I played 16 games in 2014 down back, which has been really good.
“I just want to keep developing my football and hopefully play a bit of senior footy and [I’m] just excited to be a part of what the Demons are building here.”
The 194cm key defender is still only 21 years old and has the ability to become a long-term player for Melbourne.
“I like to play one-on-one defence and try and get a bit of rebound wherever I can and push down forward when I get the chance,” Frost said.
The brother of Collingwood defender Jack said he was “very close to his family” and it was “good to have Jack down the road”.
“It’s really good because when we’re going through harder times, we can relate to each other and there is always someone to talk about, who’s on the same page as you, so it’s been really helpful.”
Frost played with star midfielder Dom Tyson at the Giants and also grew up with ruckman Max Gawn.
“I had a couple of good years with Dom up in Sydney and Max used to live just around the corner and he went to school with [my brother] Jack, so I’ve known him for a few years now,” he said.
“It should make it easier slotting in with a couple of mates already.”
