Gawn and May to play
Max Gawn and Steven May are among those named for Melbourne’s final hit-out of the pre-season, with the senior pair set to take to UTAS Stadium on Friday night.
The Dees’ skipper, who suffered a knee injury in Maroochydore, has recovered in time to get a game under his belt in the lead up to the season, while May will also make his first appearance of the year after a small knee infection.
Angus Brayshaw and Bayley Fritsch are among the big inclusions for Melbourne’s second Marsh Series match following standout performances in the club’s practice match against the Kangas last week.
Those missing
Joel Smith, who was initially named in Melbourne’s first Marsh Series game, won’t be taking to the field this week as he continues to rehab a minor quad injury.
Christian Salem (sick) is another notable name to miss, while Kysaiah Pickett won’t make the flight due to personal reasons.
What it means
With just two weeks to go until the home and away season, this is the Demons’ last opportunity to test themselves prior to their trip to Perth.
After a 33-point win against Adelaide in its first game of the year, Melbourne will be looking to carry some good form into Round 1, with a strong team named to face the Hawks.
Look out for
The Demons’ first two wins, albeit in practice matches, have been on the back of some strong defensive efforts.
With May returning to line up alongside Jake Lever, Oscar McDonald, Michael Hibberd and Neville Jetta, it will be worth watching how the backline jells together.
Oppo watch
Sam Frost will meet his former teammates for the first time this Friday night, as he pulls on the Hawthorn guernsey in Tasmania.
The new Hawk played in the opening game of 2020 where his side went down to St Kilda by 21 points.
Match info
The Dees’ clash in Launceston will kick off at 7:40pm.
