MELBOURNE has finalised its side for Sunday’s clash against the Adelaide Crows at the MCG, including livewire Jeff Garlett, utility Matt Jones and tough-nut James Harmes in its 22.
Garlett, M.Jones and Harmes have been named on the interchange, along with former Magpie Ben Kennedy, who remains in the team.
Former co-captain Jack Trengove, who has played the past three matches after almost two years on the sidelines with a foot injury, has been left out of the side. He joins another ex-co-skipper Jack Grimes as an emergency, along with midfielder Viv Michie.
Coach Paul Roos said selection was a difficult one leading into round 15.
“Our seconds played really well [on June 18]. There were some really good performances for Casey,” he said.
“There was a bit of pressure on selection and we’ve seen this year that even one poor game can lead to getting dropped.
“It’s probably more about promoting [players], who have had a really good patch from Casey, rather than a bad patch of form from a senior player.”
Garlett, who has played nine matches this year, is back in the side after spending the past two games with Casey.
M.Jones, who played the opening four matches of the season, before being sidelined for six weeks, has been one of Casey’s best over the past three weeks.
And Harmes, who played the first 11 games of the season, returns after being an emergency for the past two matches.
On Thursday night, rookie Josh Wagner (knee) and first-year player Clayton Oliver were left out of the side.
It will be the first match Wagner has missed since he made his AFL debut in round three against North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena.
Oliver, who received the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after debuting in round one against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG, will miss his fourth game this year.
For Grimes, it is the 11th time this season he has been named an emergency. He is still yet to play a match in 2016.
Michie will also be an emergency for the fifth consecutive match, after making his three appearances this year from rounds seven to nine.
