Fourth quarter
 
The Dees remained in the contest entering the final term and were a chance of breaking through for their opening win of the season.
 
But that thought ended when the Blues booted seven goals for the quarter and held the Demons goalless.
 
In the end, Carlton won the match by 58 points.

Third quarter
Just two goals were registered in the third term, courtesy of Carlton’s Andrew Walker and Melbourne’s Nathan Jones.
 
Although there were several errors and some frustrating passages of play, the Demons kept at it throughout the period.
 
Entering the final term, Melbourne trailed by 16 points.

Second quarter

It was tight early in the second term - Robinson added his second for the Blues and Clark had a couple on the board - before Carlton booted three in a row.
 
When Dennis Armfield kicked truly, Carlton was up by 19 points, but that was reduced to 11 points at the 26-minute mark when Clark nailed his third.
 
At quarter-time the margin was 13 points.

First quarter
The Demons peppered the scoreboard early on and by the 15-minute mark they had 2.3 to 0.1. Jeremy Howe and Sam Blease were the goalkickers.
 
Shaun Hampson opened Carlton’s account almost in time-on, but when Mitch Clark answered, Melbourne was still up by two goals.
 
Blue Mitch Robinson chimed in late in the term and when teammate Eddie Betts kicked a checkside after the siren, the Demons held the narrowest of margins at the first break.
