CO-CAPTAIN Jack Trengove could miss the next two to three matches after injuring his calf at training on Thursday.
Coach Mark Neeld confirmed following training that Trengove would miss this Sunday’s clash against Gold Coast Suns at the MCG. He added that Trengove would have tests to determine how long he would be sidelined.
“They need to see how it pulls up tomorrow and the next day to see how they treat it. But normally with soft tissue injuries its around the [two to three week mark],” Neeld said.
Neeld said Trengove’s form had “probably mirrored” Melbourne’s a bit in recent times, but he said the youngster’s leadership was still equal with Jack Grimes as the best at the club.
“His (Trengove) leadership is sensational. The youth or inexperience of games is what it is – those two boys are clearly the best leaders on our player lists at the moment,” he said.
“We have experimented with Jack in a variety of roles. His offensive output in the last two games, but prior to that I thought he was ok.”
Neeld said Nathan Jones had been elevated to a co-captaincy role, given Grimes will be out for long-term.
“The reason we’ve done that is (Jack Grimes) is on the long-term injury list, so he is out for a minimum of eight weeks. Whereas Trenners won’t be placed on the long-term injury list, he’ll be back in a few weeks.”
