PAUL Roos’ successor Simon Goodwin says building relationships, taking the game plan to the next level and upping the ante on training are among the key focuses for the club’s 11-day pre-season camp at Maroochydore.

Speaking at Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex on Monday – the club’s first day at camp – Goodwin said the boys had quickly adapted to the humid conditions.  

“The boys have settled in well so far,” he told Dee TV.

“We’ve got an 11-day camp and we’ve got some pretty high expectations of what we’re trying to achieve at the camp – both physically [and mentally].

“The majority of the time will be focused on our football game plan and really embedding that.”

From a personal point of view, Goodwin said he was eager to keep building relationships, given he will take over as senior coach from 2017.  

“It’s a great opportunity with 11 days away for this playing group – to come together as one,” he said.

“We’ve had 22 list changes over two years, so that’s 50 per cent of the list, so for myself [it’s about] really getting to know guys.

“The best camps that I’ve been on and been associated with are the ones where you walk away and you’ve got that real sense of achievement. That’s certainly what we’ll look for in Maroochydore.”

Goodwin was also optimistic that several leaders would jump up on the camp.

“Hopefully a few will emerge through the group … but not only that, hopefully the current leaders will continue to emerge as well,” he said.

Since his appointment last September, Goodwin said he had relished every moment at the club.

“I’m loving it. To be involved with Paul and the players on this journey is really exciting,” he said.

“I really enjoy working with the young kids [in the development area] and I’ve been able to build some really good relationships early on and really put some programs in there to fast track some development in the footy club.

“The younger guys have been terrific and really jumped on board and they want to improve as players individually, but also as a team. So there have been some good building blocks there, but I’m looking forward to progressing now to the midfield and spending some time there.”
