First quarter: Sydney Swans 4.3 (27) to Melbourne 1.1 (7)
The Swans dominated the opening term, booting four goals to one.
Mike Pyke started proceedings, before Melbourne answered via debutant Billy Stretch, who marked inside 50 and converted with his first AFL kick.
But Kurt Tippett then dominated the latter part of the quarter, registering three in a row, giving the Swans a 20-point lead at the first break.
Second quarter: Sydney Swans 7.7 (49) to Melbourne 1.3 (9)
The Swans continued to hold sway in the second term, adding three goals to nil.
Ben McGlynn, Lewis Jetta and Josh Kennedy added majors for the visitors.
The Demons managed just two behinds, as the red and blue trailed by 40 points at the main break.
Three quarter-time: Sydney Swans 11.9 (75) to Melbourne 4.5 (29)
The visitors jumped out to a 59-point lead after booting four of the opening five goals of the second half.
Jeff Garlett’s goal early in the term looked like it would be Melbourne’s only major for the quarter, until Ben Newton and Jesse Hogan kicked back-to-back goals deep in time-on.
It reduced the deficit to 46 points entering the final stanza.
Final quarter: Sydney Swans 12.16 (88) d Melbourne 7.8 (50)
With the game all but over entering the final term, it was a matter of how far the Swans or whether the Demons could peg the margin back to a respectable score.
Melbourne got back to within 30 points after consecutive goals came via Chris Dawes, Garlett and Hogan.
But in the end, the Demons booted three goals to one to lose by 38 points.
