AN AFL plan to review second tier competitions around the country has struck a chord with the League's coaches, who are keen to see players better prepared when they enter the highest level.

The AFL will conduct a review of the talent pathway in 2015 led by Bill Kelty, who stood down from the AFL Commission last December.

The League's 18 senior coaches were briefed on the plan on Wednesday at their first annual meeting with the AFL Commission.

The Australia-wide review was then announced by AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan at the 2015 season launch on Wednesday night.

"We must nurture and invest in our communities as much as the elite," McLachlan said on Wednesday night.

"This is the balance we have to get right and I believe we’re heading in the right direction.

"That’s why we’re undertaking an Australia-wide review of the game, chaired by Bill Kelty, from community football to the state leagues."

AFL coaches have become increasingly keen to play a role in devising the best pathway for young footballers, with the ideal draft age a hot topic.

Their views on the talent pathway are expected to be sought again through the year as part of Kelty's review.
