MELBOURNE coach Dean Bailey has praised the selection of veteran Demon ruckman Jeff White in the 40-man Victorian squad, which will take on the Dream Team at the MCG on May 10.

Although the initial group will be trimmed back to a final team of 25, Bailey said White - the only Melbourne player to be named in either side - deserved his selection.

"He's trained really well, Jeff, and I think he's been reasonably consistent for us," Bailey said at Junction Oval on Tuesday.

"Him and Paul Johnson for a couple of weeks there, I thought, were working reasonably well and Jeff's work rate at training and his pre-season has been fantastic, so it's a reward for effort for Whitey.

"He's been important for us for every game we've played."

White, who played State of Origin for Victoria against The Allies in 1998, was one of three ruckmen selected for the Big V - alongside Essendon's David Hille and Collingwood's Josh Fraser.

Melbourne has had a dismal start to the season but White has been commended by his teammates and coaching staff for his efforts in the ruck; even though his selection may have raised some eyebrows outside the club.

White sits seventh in the league leaders for hit-outs after four rounds and, of the players in that list, is second to West Coast Eagles ruckman Dean Cox for disposals.

Only Hille (33) and Cameron Cloke (29) have taken more marks than White and Cox, who both have 26 for the season, while Hille (five) and White (four) lead the big men in goalkicking.

As for Bailey's thoughts on the overall Victorian and Dream Team squads announced on Tuesday, he believed the selectors would get it right.

"They've got people who look across the whole [board] and there are some players who are going to miss out and there are some who are going to get picked who deserve to get picked," Bailey said.

"It's a very prestigious opportunity for players to play in such a game and they're [the selectors] looking at all sorts of things.

"The experts that are picking them, I'm sure they'll pick the right teams for both of them and I'm sure it'll be a great game."
