JACK Viney says Melbourne’s best football is “up there with the best in the competition”.

But the hard-at-it midfielder was adamant the competition is now so even that any team can beat any side on any given day, which means Melbourne must be on its game at all times.

Speaking at AAMI Park on Wednesday, Viney said Melbourne’s win over Richmond at the MCG on ANZAC Day Eve was “a really positive result for us”, but implored that the team was fully aware it couldn’t drop its guard.

“[We’ve won] two in a row now and come off a couple of good wins, and the boys are pretty happy. We feel like we’re playing some good football and looking to carry that on in the coming weeks,” he said.

“The playing group and the leaders understand that ... [we can't] get complacent. Winning isn’t something [that has happened regularly] since I’ve been at the club … we played some good football and won throughout the NAB Challenge and round one.

“We saw what happens when [complacency] happens, so thankfully the Essendon game was a bit of a learning curb and we understand that we can’t drop our guard for one second, because it’s so competitive.”

Viney made no apologies for how the team was attacking the game with gusto.

“Tommy Bugg came out and apologised for some of the things he did, but I’m really enjoying the way we’re playing our football at the moment,” he said.

“We’re playing on the edge and playing competitively. We’re standing up for our mates.

“That’s the team I want to be involved in and I love that side of football.”
