PAUL Roos says he enjoys the opportunity to take the playing group away for interstate trips.
Melbourne flew to Alice Springs on Thursday to prepare for Saturday’s game against Port Adelaide.
“I don’t mind it. Having coached an interstate game before, when I was coaching Sydney … we used to travel every second week,” Roos told Melbourne TV on Roos Views.
“There are things you’re able to achieve that you’re not on a home week and that can sometimes be sitting with a player having breakfast, having dinner or having lunch. You can talk with them about their family and coaches can get together a bit more often.
“So it’s actually a great opportunity to learn more about your group, and players learning about players.”
Roos said he also enjoyed the opportunity to meet and talk footy with Alice Springs locals.
“I like travelling and it’s a great part of the footy and going to Alice is a great way to spread the message,” he said.
“There are a lot of great people up there as well.”
Melbourne has played Port Adelaide in Alice Springs for the past two years under Roos.
While unable to get the four points in either 2014 or 2015, the team has competed with the Power on both occasions.
Roos said Saturday’s game would be another good test against a team that had played some excellent football in recent years.
“We’ve played some of our best footy up there in the last couple of years. Port is a quality, quality side,” he said.
“We haven’t won, but two years ago we had a great game up there. Last year, we were seven goals to two or three in front and then the wheels completely fell off and we were really disappointed about that.
“We have played some really good footy up there – as have they. They’re a quality, quality side and have got some experienced players. It’s another great challenge for us and I think the players are excited about it.”
