MELBOURNE women’s coach Mick Stinear provides an update on all 27 players in the lead-up to the inaugural AFL Women’s competition. Be sure to check back each day over the festive season and new year, as we present the 2017 squad …
Jasmine Grierson
She’s a really exciting young talent. Jasmine’s an elite kick of the footy and is still only young, having just finished year 12. She makes the right decisions and runs to the right spots in training. Jasmine is one we’re really looking forward to watching develop. I see her having an impact as a forward, early on in this competition. As she continues to develop, her versatility will take her anywhere around the ground.
Melissa Hickey
Mel’s another one who has stood out. She’s defended really well at training – she’s a quality intercept defender. Mel reads the game really well and she’ll be an exciting prospect for us off half-back. If we get the pressure on the footy, she’ll be a really attacking player for us. Mel’s good in the air and is a great leader and someone who always puts the team first. She’s made it known to the group that she wants to be one of the key drivers of winning the inaugural premiership.
Emma Humphries
She made the transition from Tassie, so she’s currently staying with one of our supporters, Peter Lawrence. Emma’s doing really well. From her first few weeks of training, she was one of the standouts, with her work rate, work ethic and decision-making around the footy. In a lot of the conditioning running, she might not be the quickest at the start, but she’s the hardest working at the end. She’s really pushing through at training and with that type of work rate, she’ll be playing half-back, wing and through the midfield late in the game. Whenever everyone else has put the cue in the rack, she’ll be finishing strong. She’s a really good ball-user and is going really well.
