“We went into the game having secured finals the week before so for us it was really important that we got effort and contest from the players. We played Sandringham who was playing to consolidate the top two. We started the game really well and won the first quarter but after that we lacked a bit of effort and compliance to our roles and structure so the game started to fall away pretty quickly. We had some okay individual performances but from a team perspective, it wasn’t the performance that we needed going into finals this week. It was disappointing but the last six weeks haven’t been great. There’s been a lot of inconsistency there with performance but we’ll move on from that and we’ll worry about this week now” – Justin Plapp

Rohan Bail: Ro had 15 possessions and 9 tackles. He worked hard through the middle of the ground but his ball use was questionable at times. He didn’t have a lot of impact on the game. The 9 tackles were a positive but we certainly expected a lot more out of Rohan.

Mark Jamar: Jamar had 4 disposals, 1 tackle and 56 hit-outs so getting the first hit of the ball was a positive. However, there were some inconsistencies with where the ball was going at times. This isn’t a direct criticism of Mark but there wasn’t a lot of synergy within the midfield this weekend. Mark didn’t have one of his better games; he was really solid last week against Coburg. We need him to bounce back this week particularly with the finals. He’s a proud bloke so he will definitely want to bounce back and rectify it.

Jay Kennedy-Harris: Jay had 17 possessions, 9 tackles, kicked 2 goals and was probably one of our better players on the day. His kicking was better this week, as he’s missed some opportunities over the past few weeks. He certainly found himself winning a lot more ball. It was good to see that his work rate hadn’t dropped off on the defensive side of the game, which has been pretty strong from him over the past couple of weeks.

Dean Kent: This was Dean’s second week back after a long lay off. He had 13 possessions and 2 tackles. In his games over the past two weeks, he’s looked better as the games have gone on but he’s clearly missed a lot of football. We’re looking to get improvement out of him next week. He’s been a little bit undisciplined and there are few areas of his game where he needs to get better. However, he’s got some great assets that we need in our team at the moment.

Max King: Maxwas another one coming back after a couple of weeks off. He had 4 possessions, 1 tackle and 1 mark. He did a bit of back up work in the ruck and gave Russian help when he needed. We were disappointed with Max on the weekend and we’re expecting him to respond this week and to come out and compete in the way that we need him to. He’s another young fella that’s learning.

Dean Terlich: Dean had 20 possessions, 4 tackles and rebounded 58 times so defensively, he was very good. Offensively, he turned the ball over at critical stages and cost us goals so there was a bit of the good and the bad. His intent to play the role that we needed him to play was solid.

Jimmy Toumpas: Jimmy had 16 possessions and 5 tackles. Like Rohan, he was one who we probably needed a little more out of. Offensively, he won a bit of the ball but defensively; he was caught out two or three times, which is something that we’re working with Toump on. We’re also working on having more impact through the critical contest and the contested ball. He has sort of been in and out over the last 2 or 3 weeks so hopefully we can get a bit of a spike in his performance this week.

Mitch White: Mitch was probably our other player who we thought went really well on the day. He played on Ahmed Saad who’s a very classy small forward for St Kilda. Even though he had three or four goals kicked against him, I thought that his intent to play his role and fight for four quarters was a credit to him. He ended up having 16 possessions, 4 tackles and took 3 contested marks, which was a positive as well. He certainly put himself in the firing line at times so I was very happy with Mitch.
