MELBOURNE women’s coach Mick Stinear provides an update on all 27 players in the lead-up to the inaugural AFL Women’s competition. Be sure to check back each day over the festive season and new year, as we present the 2017 squad …
Jessica Anderson
She’s shaping as a powerful, key forward and is getting better and better at using her body in the contest. Jess is working really hard to get herself at the level required to compete. She’s an exciting prospect for us, as a strong, marking forward with a powerful kick. I see her being one of our key targets in the forward line.
Deanna Berry
She’s just finished year 12 this year and has gone straight into an AFL pre-season. Deanna is working hard to get herself conditioned for AFL level and she’s started to show some good signs on the track, including her communication and decision-making. She’s one of our best kicks of the footy. In terms of expectation, we see her as a very versatile player who can play back, forward and come through the midfield as well.
Maddie Boyd
Maddie is one part of the trio that makes the trip from Geelong to training. She’s made a great start and she’s showed her strengths in the air – Maddie’s a really good contested mark. The way she’s shaping up at the moment, she’ll be our second ruck option and a key target up forward. One of her key strengths is her endurance running, so she’s shown she can run all day, so that’ll certainly come in handy.
