LEADER Jack Viney says Melbourne’s 33-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Sunday night was one of “the best feelings I’ve had since I’ve been at the club”.
Viney, who had a career-best 37 disposals, continued his fine start to the year and said he was “very happy” with the win.
“We haven’t won two in a row since I’ve been here, so it’s even better than I thought it’d be,” he told Melbourne TV.
“We had a bit of a wake-up call against Essendon [in round two]. We won the round before it and we thought we were a bit of a chance to get two in a row and we thought it’d come naturally, which it didn’t.
“We dropped our standards, myself included, so I probably had an extra level of focus this week with my preparation and keeping a strong focus. [I] tried to come out with the same intensity that I had previously.”
Viney said the fact Melbourne broke the two in a row hoodoo - for the first time since 2011 - was important.
“It’s an awesome feeling,” he said.
“It’s a good feeling winning and it makes it a bit easier, but at the same time, the group doesn’t want to become complacent.
“We got complacent after round one and it was the opportunity for the boys to win two in a row, but we can’t take the foot off the pedal. The leaders will be driving to keep the standards up and keep on trying for wins.”
Viney said the club now had a genuine belief in its ability.
“I think we’ve been building since NAB Challenge. We played well in the NAB Challenge,” he said.
“I think we’ve played reasonable football bar the Essendon game. The boys were quite confident of what we were capable of and we thought we were building and playing good football most weeks.
“We’ve just got to keep it up and there are certain levels to go – and we’re not satisfied with where we’re at. We were OK [against Richmond] – it wasn’t our best game, so we’ll review and learn and go again.”
