DEFENDER Heritier Lumumba will be placed on the long-term injury list after battling several concussion incidents this season.
Elite performance manager Dave Misson confirmed that Lumumba, who has been sidelined since July, would be ruled out for the remainder of the year.
“As Roosy explained in his press conference this morning, Heritier Lumumba won’t be playing again this year,” he told Melbourne TV.
Coach Paul Roos told reporters earlier in the day at AAMI Park that the club was hopeful Lumumba would return.
“We’re just hoping that ‘H’ gets right and comes back to pre-season and has a good year next year,” he said.
Misson said tall forward Sam Weideman had trained well after he missed last Saturday’s win over Port Adelaide with a quadriceps injury.
“Sam did some good training today and we expect that he will train fully on Friday and be available [for selection],” he said.
Jeff Garlett will continue to be monitored while he recovers from a skin infection, while midfielder Ben Newton is still a week away from returning after being sidelined with a knee injury.
“Jeff [was] a lot better today and we expect him to come in and have a run tomorrow and train on Friday,” said Misson.
“[Ben] continues to get better but he probably won’t play this week although he could be a strong chance to play next week.”
