CASEY’S women’s team has survived a final quarter comeback from Williamstown to hold onto its first VFLW victory by 13 points at Burbank Oval on Sunday.

The game was ultimately decided in a four-minute period during the third term, where Casey slotted three quick goals to blow the margin out to 27 points at the final change.

Jess Duffin led the Seagulls charge in the last quarter with a gallant performance, but it wasn’t enough to strip Casey of its first win for the season, as Kaila Bentvelzen toe-poked through her fifth goal to seal the game.

Casey showed some good resistance late in the game, completing an impressive team performance.

The Demons scoreboard remained unblemished until the final two minutes of the match, with sharp-shooting in front of goal being a key factor in the result.

Bentvelzen produced a stunning individual performance with five goals, including the opening two majors of the match to get the Demons off to a flyer.

Casey brought a strong intensity early, forcing repeat stoppages inside 50 and looked the more dangerous side.

But after Williamstown’s Stacey Cross kicked a late goal and cut the margin to six points at quarter-time, the Seagulls responded.

The home side gained some ascendancy in the second term, playing the match deep in their forward half, but Maddie Sehvlin snapped a great goal against the flow to help the Demons claim a 10-point lead at half-time.

The game came to a halt in the third quarter as Demon Georgia McLean was crunched in a marking contest and helped from the field.

Darcy Guttridge was also left in pain after a heavy knock in the latter stages of the match. The 18-year-old was one of Casey’s best performers, throwing her body around in defence to save numerous scores.

She received plenty of assistance down back from skipper Harriet Cordner who took the game on with her run out of defence and provided a spark for the Demons.

It was a great result for Casey as the girls continue to show improvement this season.

The Demons will now have two weeks off before looking to register another victory against the Western Bulldogs in round seven.
