First quarter: Melbourne 2.1 (13) to Collingwood 2.0 (12)
Basketballer turned new Demon Tegan Cunningham started promisingly when she kicked the first goal of the match.
Caitlyn Edwards answered with Collingwood’s opener, before it had two on the board and hit the front.
But an Alyssa Mifsud goal just before quarter-time gave the Demons a one-point lead.
Second quarter: Melbourne 5.5 (35) to Collingwood 2.0 (12)
Melbourne controlled the second term, booting three goals to nil, leading by 24 points at half-time.
Cunningham, in her first AFLW hit-out, continued to impress with another two majors, giving her three by the long change.
And another recruit, Maddy Guerin, kicked her first major.
Third quarter: Melbourne 6.5 (41) to Collingwood 4.4 (28)
Melbourne made it five in a row when recruit and former Giant Ash Guest kicked truly.
Her major put Melbourne up by 29 points when she landed a bouncing off-break goal.
But the Magpies managed a couple before three quarter-time to peg the margin back to 13 points.
Final quarter: Collingwood 7.4 (46) to Melbourne 6.7 (43)
Melbourne failed to land a major in the final term and consequently lost the game in the dying stages, after Collingwood kicked three in a row in the last term.
With less than a minute remaining, Meg Hutchins kicked truly for the Pies, giving them a three-point win.
It was disappointing finish by the Demons, after they led for most of the match.
