OF THE 12,607 players to have played a VFL/AFL match, before the start of round three, only 179 have kicked 300 goals or more in their career.
On Saturday, that group should extend to 180, when Jeff Garlett notches up his 300th VFL/AFL goal – an outstanding achievement, when looking at it from those numbers.
Garlett, who kicked four goals against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba last round, sits on 299 majors, entering round three.
And all things being equal, his first major against North Melbourne at the MCG on the weekend will see the small forward achieve the triple ton.
But for the dynamic Demon, it’s all about team actions first and milestones second.
“I wouldn’t have been able to get the milestone unless I got an opportunity at Carlton first and then at Melbourne,” he told Melbourne Media.
“[Fellow small forwards] Eddie Betts has kicked more than 500 goals and Jeff Farmer almost kicked 500 goals, which is an amazing effort to do that, but any small forward in the competition, who has kicked that many – it’s fantastic.
“As long as I can play my team role, which is forward pressure and tackling, I’m happy. Goals are a bonus.”
Garlett teamed beautifully with key forward Jesse Hogan last round and said he was eager to build that partnership this year.
“Jesse’s had a big pre-season and it’s all paying off, as you can see by his game [when he kicked five goals] last week,” he said.
“Hopefully us two can continue to be a bit more dangerous for the rest of the season.
“It was good that both of us were on the end of a few last week.”
