THE BROWNLOW Medal has been awarded to the Best and Fairest player in the league since 1924.
Each year, the winner of the award receives a medal and a certificate, however between 1965 and 1993, these hand-crafted certificates weren’t presented.
This year, the AFL has produced back-dated certificates for each Brownlow Medallist, and on Monday night, the Melbourne Football Club had the honour of passing on Jim Stynes’ award to his family.
Stynes was crowned the AFL’s best player in 1991, and Max Gawn, a player heavily influenced by the inspirational man, handed the keepsake over to Stynes’ children, Matisse and Tiernan.
It was a touching moment at the Demons’ Best and Fairest ceremony, and one that Gawn was honoured to be a part of.
Watch the video above as some of the people closest to Stynes reflect on his historic feat in 1991.
