No.5 – Shaun Smith’s Mark of the Century
It’s known as Mark of the Century, and rightfully so.
Shaun Smith stood on Garry Lyon’s head to take an incredible mark that Viney says will go down in history.
No.4 – ‘The Merger Game’
With talks of a merger between Melbourne and Hawthorn in 1996, Viney reflects on a massive game between the two, known as ‘The Merger Game’.
The Demons went down in a one-point thriller, but thankfully the merger never took place.
No.3 – Stynes through the mark
It was the 1987 Preliminary Final, and the Demons were all but home, until Jim Stynes waltzed through the mark and got Gary Buckenara within range.
Buckenara kicked truly to down the Dees, but it was an iconic moment that was the making of Stynes.
No.2 – Breaking the finals drought
The Demons failed to see September action for 23 years after their premiership in 1964, but that drought came to an end in 1987.
In Viney’s debut season, Melbourne got over the line against the Dogs in Round 22 to secure its place in the finals.
No.1 – A special goal in 1987
The following week, the Dees’ made that long-awaited finals appearance, beating North Melbourne in an Elimination Final at the MCG.
Viney got his side off to the dream start with a running goal on the boundary in the opening 30 seconds of the match.
