COACH Paul Roos says several injuries have tested the club’s depth, particularly when playing against quality teams such as Port Adelaide.

Speaking after Melbourne’s disappointing 61-point loss to the Power at Traeger Park on Saturday, Roos said the injuries had caught up with the club.

“Since round one, we’ve got a lot of guys who are out, like [Dean] Kent, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Dom Tyson and [Chris Dawes], so we’re five or six down from our best team … although [Port Adelaide] had [Jackson] Trengove out and [Paddy] Ryder out,” he said.

“We probably haven’t got the depth of the top sides, so we need everyone back on deck and we need them playing well.

“It doesn’t take away the disappointment [of the loss] and how poor our performance was after half-time.”

Roos said his side simply had “a lot of players down” against the Power.

“For us to win [like we did] last week, we had 20 or 21 good players and everyone helped each other out and that gets back to team versus self,” he said.

“When our guys start thinking about themselves, it affects everyone in the team.

“I thought Col Garland was exceptional; Hoges (Jesse Hogan) was really good early and he (Jake Spencer) was OK. He battled hard, [as did Jeff Garlett] early on.”

Roos said defender Neville Jetta, who returned against the Power after missing four matches with concussion, was subbed during the match due to cramps.

“We were going to [sub] Fitzy (Jack Fitzpatrick) … but after we spoke to Nev, he just felt like he was starting to cramp up,” he said.

“There was probably another quarter and 10 minutes to go, so that’s why we subbed him out, just to look after him.”
