SAM Weideman says every red and blue player, once again, played their role
Weideman said it was a classic team performance with every Demon chipping in to help book a preliminary final against West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium next Saturday.
“I think tonight, I felt I probably didn’t get as many opportunities for myself, and I thought I had to just make the most of them,” he told Melbourne Media.
“But I feel like I did that and so many different players did that as well – and we just had to seize the moment. Some of the forwards’ efforts, like Mitch Hannan, just stepped-up when he had to.
“It was just awesome. The players were playing their role for the team, which was really special.”
Speaking post-match, not long after the win, Weideman said the feeling in the rooms was phenomenal.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s a massive buzz and there are so many people down here – it’s such an awesome feeling. To beat the Hawks and to play the way we wanted – we were tested at times – but it’s such a great feeling,” he said.
“They kicked a few goals in the last quarter, which probably unsettled us a bit, and we needed to get control back. I feel like we did that.
“Melky (Jake Melksham) slotted that one on his left from 50 [metres] and it was a pretty good goal. We just had to get our control of the game back and keep the ball in our hands and that’s what we did – it was really good.”
Weideman said the team would take a lot of confidence over to the west, having defeated the Eagles there in round 22.
