FORMER co-captain Jack Trengove is confident Melbourne will make the correct captaincy appointment and he believes there are a handful of candidates.

Trengove nominated former co-captain partner Jack Grimes, last year’s vice-captain Nathan Jones and leadership group members Colin Garland and James Frawley as contenders. But he was adamant there were “a number of candidates who could fit the role well”.

“The guys that are leading the way are Grimesy, on the back of what he’s done in the last couple of years,” Trengove told melbournefc.com.au.

“Nathan Jones has certainly showed that he’s got it in him with the way he’s performed and attacks his footy.

“Other blokes like Colin Garland and James Frawley [are in the mix], but a lot of guys are putting their hands up, so it’s going to come down to the players and who they think is the best fit for it.”

Trengove, who stepped down as co-captain at the end of the 2013 – after he became the youngest VFL/AFL captain when he was appointed for the 2012 season – said he was proud to lead the club.

“I certainly was. It’s just a shame that we couldn’t get the success that we were all hoping for,” he said.

“I’ve certainly learned a lot during my time, but hopefully the opportunity comes around again, later on. It’s just a shame I couldn’t get my individual game sorted.

“I’ve just turned 22 and hopefully I’ve got a lot of footy ahead of me, so hopefully I can get my game sorted and when I get some more experience down the track, I can take on some more responsibility again.”

Although no longer captain, Trengove said he didn’t feel too different at the moment without the title.

“You don’t really notice it too much at this time of the year, because there is a lot of training-based stuff and there’s not the pressure of games,” he said.

“When you’ve got that added responsibility as captain, a lot of the players are looking to you for answers in certain situations.”

“With that responsibility taken away a little bit, it’s not as much there. But to be honest, not a lot has changed. You still go about your business as you usually would. That added pressure of responsibility isn’t there.”
