OVER the next few days, we'll be recapping the seasons of every Melbourne listed player in 2018.
Today, we'll be reviewing number six through to 10.
#6 – Jordan Lewis
Games played: 24
The 307-game veteran played every game bar one in 2018.
Lewis played less on the ball in 2018, deployed in a sweeping, half-back role which saw him average 2.9 rebound 50s per game.
Lewis was also amongst the best at the club for ball use by foot, ranked third, with an average of 8.3 effective kicks per game.
His best game of the season came in the Queen’s Birthday loss to the Magpies, when he notched up 33 disposals and eight rebound 50s.
#7 – Jack Viney
Games played: 10
The co-captain had an interrupted 2018 season due to injury, playing only 10 matches.
But when Viney was on the park, he was superb, adding much needed contested grunt to Melbourne’s midfield.
He was outstanding in the finals series, starring with 10 tackles in his return to footy in the elimination final against Geelong.
Across his 10 matches, the 24-year-old averaged 24.5 disposals, 13.5 contested possessions and 5.9 tackles per game.
His performance of the season came against Port Adelaide in round 14. Viney received three Brownlow votes for the match, finishing with 31 touches, 20 contested possessions and seven tackles.
After an interrupted season, Viney will be looking to have a huge pre-season to hit the ground running in round one, 2019.
#8 – Jake Lever
Games played: 11
Just as Lever got going in 2018, his season was cruelly ended by a torn ACL in round 11 against the Western Bulldogs.
The star recruit took a few weeks to adjust to footy in red and blue, however he was fantastic once he got going down back.
Lever read attacking forays well and showed off the defensive abilities that saw him included in the 40-man 2017 All-Australian squad.
At the end of the year, he was ranked 11th in the league for average intercepts per game (2.5), while AFL Player Ratings ranked him seventh in the league for key defenders.
His season highlight came against Carlton in round nine, when he had 27 touches and five rebound 50s.
Lever is another member of the squad whose return will have a genuine impact on Melbourne’s improvement in 2019.
#9 – Charlie Spargo
Games played: 18
The youngest player to don red and blue in 2018, Spargo burst onto the scene with a two-goal performance in his debut against the Bombers in round six.
After his debut in April, Spargo missed only two matches for the season and showed promising signs in just his first year on an AFL list.
#10 – Angus Brayshaw
Games played: 22
The talented 22-year-old finally showed off his full potential in 2018, finishing third in the Brownlow Medal.
Brayshaw spent the first few weeks of the season in the VFL, playing his first game for the year in round four.
After a few weeks back in the side, Gus hit the go button – playing some outstanding footy during Melbourne’s six match winning streak in the first half of the season.
He recorded 30 or more touches in six matches, finishing the season ranked first at the club for inside 50s (112) and second for total disposals (574).
Brayshaw had his best game of the year against the Western Bulldogs in round 11, recording 39 touches, nine inside 50s and a goal in Melbourne’s win.
