IN HIS 10-year career, fan-favourite Demon Aaron Davey didn’t get his chance to pull on an Indigenous guernsey.
The Kokatha man retired just a year prior to Narrm’s first guernsey in 2014 and despite missing out on this special experience, is still humbled to see the Dees Indigenous jumpers to this day.
Addressing Narrm’s AFLW side ahead of the 2024 Indigenous Round, Davey said he was proud to see the club’s impact.
“Indigenous Round, it’s a massive thing for me,” Davey said.
“Before I retired in 2013, I’d always pushed to try and get an Indigenous jumper and then Neville Jetta took the idea the year after, and I didn’t get my opportunity.
“But to now see the game growing and to see what you ladies are doing, it's humbling for me.”
Davey currently holds the record for the most games played for the Dees by an Indigenous player – finishing his career at 178 matches.
Hailing from Darwin and now residing in Queensland, Davey joined the team in Cairns the day before their Week 9 game at Cazalys Stadium.
Speaking on importance of the women’s league, the former Demon spoke of his joy in seeing the influence it’s had on the younger generation of players, in particular, his nieces.
“Gone are the days where everything was just about us men,” Davey said.
“To see the competition grow and to see my nieces come through and the impact that you're having on some of the young girls.
“I've been fortunate enough working with AFL Cairns to see that growth.
“Everything that you do and the way you represent the football club, not only over the last couple of years, but more importantly, the history behind it…I think it’s special in itself.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, just always remember that you’re winners for what you do for everyone in Australia.”
The Dees will face the Hawks tonight with all the on-field action kicking off from 7:45pm.
